While Ford and Harley Davidson have reached out to the foreign market of India to rake in money, we have other auto makers expecting to create ripples in 2010 in the local auto consumer environment. Whether it will be a success or not will depend on consumer’s confidence in the economy and reduction in unemployment rate from 10 percent to its traditional level.
More than 15 million people are still unemployed. So the success of the auto show 2010 may face a dent once the show is over and the new cars roll out in 2010.
Ford Fusion Hybrid has been declared 2010 Car Of The Year but whether there will be enough buyer out there to stop its maker Ford from going to the government for help this like others did is an open question.
The jury is still out on results the government stimulus to auto makers have generated. The taxpayers are upset while consumers are mad about the big fat bonuses the auto executives are giving to themselves.
Reports say U.S. automakers and officials at the Detroit auto show struck an optimistic but cautious tone on Monday as they sought to put a toxic year of slumping sales and massive government aid behind. The reaction makes sense specially if you look at in perspective that there were 4.2 million job losses in 2009 upping the unemployment rate to nationwide average of 10% now.
Following a disastrous year that saw GM and Chrysler LLC forced into government-led bankruptcy, many executives said 2010 should be much better.
