Watch cricket highlights: India vs West Indies at the Champions Trophy played on September 30, 2009.

Team Info: India Dinesh Karthik in for Tendulkar (stomach infection), Nayar for Ishanth | WI – Kieran Powell for Dale Richards (injured)

Scoreline: West Indies 129 all out | Praveen Kumar, Nehra 3 each
India get there in the 33rd over – Virat Kohli 79, Karthik 34

With the Aus-Pak game going the way India didn’t want, the chase fizzled out a bit – Kohli showing glimpses of why the hype (without results) that has been following him for a while now is probably justified. When Dravid was brought back into the ODI squad, my first thought was that it was a good time for him to announce his retirement from ODI cricket. It was so obvious he was living on borrowed time and he might as well have said f**k you to those who like to use and throw. If what was being said on air yesterday is to be believed, he might well never play ODI cricket for India again. Also disturbing was the axing of Yusuf for what appears to be a long period.

Preplay: If Pakistan don’t beat Australia today, this game has no relevance for the Indian team in the context of the tournament.

Watch cricket highlights: Pakistan vs Australia at the Champions Trophy played on September 30.

Scoreline: Pakistan 205/6 – Kamran 44, Yousuf 45, Misbah 41 | Brett Lee 10-30-1
Australia scrape through off the final delivery – Hussey 64, Ponting 32, Lee 12 | All the Pakistani bowlers in the final stages of the game

Woohoo. If Pakistan who looked flat for extended periods of the game can push Australia to the final ball, all of a sudden my personal favourites New Zealand are looking shaky if an eager Pakistan turns up for the semis. The conspiracy theorists would have a lot to say with respect to India’s dependence on this result, but if you think about it objectively – when was the last time Pakistan played consistently through a tournament they won. That’s just how they are, which makes them the exciting team people look forward to watching. In a way, Pakistan supporters will be feeling more comfortable with the loss today because it balances out the earlier wins. Afridi the bowler also seems to be slowly entering the tournament.

Asif’s first spell was as poor as Pakistan’s handling of their final batting overs. But good to see the return (eventually) of one of the finest bowlers around. Am also feeling hugely masochistic. So here goes – Naved Rana, you little beauty. Never. Ever. Did I think the day would come when I’d say that.

As for Aus, they were almost perfect during the periods Pakistan were flat. Hussey got the MoM award, but Lee could well have got it. And should have.

Scoreline: England 146 all out – Collingwood 40 | Shane Bond 10-2-21-3, Elliott 8-31-4, Mills 10-2-19-1
NZ get there in 27.1 overs: Brendon McCullum 48 (39), Martin Guptill 53 (55) | Stuart Broad 4 wickets – New Zealand and England make it to the semis.

The McCullum-Guptill onslaught and NZ are through on a tough batting wicket to the semis – been waiting several months to say that.

Scoreline: Australia 234/4 (42.3) – Rain washes out game – Ponting 65, Hussey 67, Cameron White 30 no, Paine 56 | Ashish Nehra 8-38-1

Damn rain.

Ponting brilliant against pace conservative vs spin but at least looking to use his feet; Nehra super by a distance; Harbhajan and Ishanth seemingly weighed down by their good records vs Ponting; Mishra (in for Yusuf) and Praveen Kumar (for RP) pretty cool; Mike Hussey so efficient in his run-collecting no one apart from the team total gave a damn – thank Australia for Cameron White.

Scoreline: England 323 – Owais Shah 98 (89), Eoin Morgan 67 (34), Collingwood 82 (94)
SA 301/9 Graeme Smith 141 (134) – James Anderson

Didn’t watch the England innings live and had to rely on an abridged repeat, which is a pity, cos it means the Morgan-Shah knocks aren’t as comprehensive here as I’d have preferred to make them.

Smith wasn’t his fluent best for the most part but considering he’s one of those players who doesn’t need to be fluent to score heavy, it didn’t matter eventually. For England, Anderson piddled on viewers like myself who think he’s good only in helpful conditions. SA out, SL’s hopes are now dependent on an England win vs NZ.

Watch cricket highlights: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka at the 2009 Champions Trophy, played on September 27, 2009.

Scoreline: NZ 315/7 Jesse Ryder 74 (58), Martin Guptill 66, Vettori 48
Sri Lanka 277 all out: Mahela Jayawardene 77, Kulasekara 57 no, Dilshan 41

Finally, New Zealand stop frustrating their fans. Oh wait. Ryder’s now out. It happened in the T20 World Cup – just when they were looking good half the team fell out injured or sick. But I suppose, no one could be as frustrated as Ryder himself, evident from his expletive-ridden rejection of the pretty physios endearments. Guptill looked like he wanted to stick around for a change before putting on a show of his phenomenal clean-striking abilities.

Mahela looked set to repeat his 2007 World Cup Semis knock vs NZ where he’d bent them over in the closing overs – unfortunately for Lanka, wasn’t to be. Brilliant knock however from a modern great.

Scoreline: Australia 275/8 Ricky Ponting 79, Mitchell Johnson 73 (47) – Nikita Miller 10-1-24-2
WI 225 all out – Andre Fletcher 54, Travis Dowlin 55

Did see the Aus batting live, and on a difficult wicket, Ponting put on an exhibition of the different level he sometimes operates on relative to his teammates. Apart from Johnson of course. From what could be gleaned while making the highlights, WI appear to have been clued in on the chase big time – so that’s now 2 games in which they’ve got into winning positions for extended periods. Not sure how much this has affected the bargaining power of the WI Board.

Watch highlights – India vs Pakistan – from the 2009 Champions Trophy played on September 26, 2009.

Scoreline: Pakistan 302/9 – Shoaib Malik 128 (126), Mohammad Yousuf 87 (88) – Ashish Nehra 4 wickets
India lose (248 all out) Gautam Gambhir 57 (46), Raina 46 (41), Dravid 76 (103) – Aamer, Ajmal, Rana, Afridi 2 wickets each

I’ve never liked Shoaib Malik. Have always looked at him as the guy who displaced Saqlain from the Pakistan team. But even his biggest haters today would have had to concede a super knock in the company of Yousuf, who was deft as he often is. What made this Malik knock a great knock was that after the breathtaking Nazir show, for a long period, the Indian bowlers appeared to be in control. While the bowlers barring Nehra had poor outings, such was the intelligence of the knock that it was only after the 30th over that the real damage of the partnership began to slowly rear itself in a scratching-the-head sort of what-has-been-silently-going-on-here way.

One thing though about the Indian players today while all this was happening – having grown up (at least physically) from the 80s onwards watching countless India-Pak matches, the mood in the field was different today and the players were relatively chilled out especially during the typical Pakistani openers-assault.

Gambhir and Raina were stand-out for India. Though Gambhir was totally revved up and looking to attack, India depended quite a bit on the free-hits early on to ease the pressure. The Dravid knock was better than 76-off-103-in-a-chase-over-300, in the sense that, had Raina come off for a longer period, it would have been a lauded effort.

All in all, a good win for Pakistan who played the better cricket overall. Also, it turns out Pre-Match Younis is as cool as Post-Match Younis.

Preplay: Too bad Yuvraj is missing this tournament since he’s one of those players who transcends national leanings through his sheer presence on a cricket field. Hope the game doesn’t disappoint.
