Watch cricket highlights: Australia vs New Zealand – the Final of the 2009 Champions Trophy played on October 5, 2009.

Scoreline: NZ 200/9 Guptill 40, Broom 37, Franklin 33 | Hauritz 3 wickets, Lee 2
Aus win the 2009 edition: Shane Watson 105, Cameron White 62 | Mills 10-2-27-3, Bond 10-2-34-1

Foreplay: Nothing like a big tournament win to lift a long finger (on the lips) to the Australia-are-finished sniggers and (gleeful) laments regarding retirements.

The return of Watson (at least to international viewers) began under Warne in the 2008 IPL, and in Ponting he’s found another strong captain with the shrewdness to let him bask, frolic and howl in the barn sun so long as match-boxes are kept at a safe distance. White on the other hand has a more self-made look to his return and so despite the super effort from Mills-Bond to have Aus worried in the first ten overs, it was fairly a calm chase after that.

It’s safe to say now that the rebuilding-process for Aus is complete and while the difference between them and other teams is not what it was a few years back (in fact, in some conditions, there might not be any difference), world cricket is now once again seriously competitive after a long time.

Update: Vettori’s out with a hamstring problem which was evident in his outfielding during the semis. Jeetan Patel comes in after all, and NZ are having a bat having won the toss.
Preplay Impotence: With Ryder out, NZ’s best shot would perhaps be to have Australia chase. Nathan McCullum in place of Broom would be ideal but since he’s not even in the squad, maybe Jeetan Patel would be a neat idea. The other McCullum after a brief visit to calm-Brendon has returned to his going-nuts game. Which is probably the best option for his team. Also, Ross Taylor’s last 3 scores have been 4, 1, 38. So the Taylor law of averages is kind of leaning to him doing well today. All in all, both sides have very very watchable batsmen and bowlers, so hopefully it will be a good final.
