Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was Monday presented a giant garland of currency notes by her fans from Karnataka. Though the exact value of the garland is not known, onlookers put it in the region of a whopping Rs.5 crore!
In fact, no one noticed the Rs.1,000 currency notes with which the giant garland was created until these were identified by a local photographer when he zoomed in.
Earlier, while Mayawati was being garlanded, mediapersons could make out from a distance that it was not a run-of-the-mill garland. But beholders perceived it as one made of some exquisite imported flowers.
However, the mystery was unravelled no sooner than the still pictures were promptly lifted and beamed by TV channels.
Those present on the dais, however, feigned ignorance about the unique garland in which some 50,000 currency notes of Rs.1,000 each were believed to have been used.
The garland was specially crafted and brought by Mayawati’s party functionaries all the way from Bangalore for Monday’s mega rally organised by her to mark the Bahujan Samaj Party’s silver jubilee celebrations, which coincided with the 76th birth anniversary of party founder and her political mentor Kanshi Ram.

Further modifications have been made to the Tamil Nadu Assembly complex design.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi reviewed the Assembly design drawings and a decision was taken to reduce the height of the Secretariat building adjoining the Assembly hall.
It was earlier proposed that the Secretariat building would be 20 floors in height but it has now been reduced to eight floors.
Hubert Nienhoff, architect and partner in gmp- von Gerkan, Marg und Partner Architects, Berlin, told The Hindu that the height was reduced for three reasons. The Assembly would now have only one iconic element: a dome modelled on a temple car. A 20-storied building near it would have competed with the importance of the dome. Secondly, it was felt that the tall tower would hide the dome and make it less visible from certain areas. The existing height restriction on buildings also does not permit a 20-storied building and it was decided to abide by the prevalent rules and reduce the height.
Mr. Neinhoff said the project is on track and as per schedule. Tender discussions are expected to commence by August-end and construction by October. The first phase of the Assembly complex would be completed by mid-2010.
A government official said there had been an encouraging response from a number of companies for the bids floated for the construction of the main block of the complex. Several companies evinced interest in participating in the project, as they considered it would be a matter of prestige and honour for them to be awarded with the contract, the official added.
PWD Minister Durai Murugan, who was present, told presspersons that the firm made a presentation on the ‘B’ block (the Secretariat complex) to the Chief Minister. It would have an area of about 6 lakh sq.ft. The ‘A’ block that houses the Assembly complex would have an area of 9 lakh sq.ft.
The designs were first presented to the Chief Minister in January. The original design had five circular courtyards with the main Assembly hall under a dome in the fourth courtyard. In June, it was revised and the Assembly hall was moved to the second courtyard. The fifth courtyard was dropped. The present modification is the second revision.

Silambarasan Option on Politics?
Silambarasan turned 26 today. His birthday was celebrated with much fanfare at the Devar Kalyana Mandapam on Habibulla Road today. The event was organized by his fan club office bearers, who were also present at the celebrations. Silambarasan arrived at the venue at 11.00 a.m. and cut a cake as part of the celebrations.
After the celebrations, he answered a few questions posed by the journalists gathered at the venue. On whether Nayan wished him a happy birthday, he snapped at the journos asking them why they should care about it. He shrugged off the mockery made at him in Thamizh Padam by saying it’s just a movie. On a question about his entry into politics, Silambarasan said he need not be in politics to work for the welfare of the public.

The last day of filing of nominations for the 2010 Sri Lanka presidential elections has ended at 12 noon yesterday, December 16, 2009, held at the Election Secretariat auditorium in Rajagiriya. Sri Lanka Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake announced that there will be 23 candidates in the upcoming presidential election. There were five independent groups while other 18 candidates were represented by their political parties.
Two major candidates are competing for the Sri Lankan Presidency. Despite of some controversies in his administration, the current executive President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to run for president again. He is the candidate of the United People’s Freedom Alliance. He will face the New Democratic Party’s candidate General Sarath Fonseka. He is former Chief of Defence Staff who is considered a national hero in Sri Lanka after having an important role in ending the Sri Lanka Civil war in 2009.
Independent candidates include former SLMC MP for Jaffna District Aithurus M. Illias, former Deputy Minister of Higher Education Meera Mohideen Mohamed Musthaffa, M. K. Shivajilingam, W.M.U.B. Wijekoon, and W.V. Mahiman Ranjith.
Other 16 candidates who joined the race for Sri Lankan presidency are: leader of the National Development Front Achala Ashoka Suraweera, M.C.M. Ismail representing Democratic United National Front candidate, Adurage Senaratne Silva from Patriotic National Front party, Battaramulle Seelaratne from Jana Setha Peramuna party, C.J. Sugathsiri Gamage from United Democratic Front party, J.A. Peter Nelson Perera from Sri Lanka Progressive Front party, K.G.R.L. Perera from Our National Front party, M.B. Thaminimulla from All Are Citizens All Are Kings Organization party, leader of the Left Front and Nava Sama Samaja Party Vikramabahu Karunaratne, P.D.P.S. Anura Liyanage representing Sri Lanka Labour Party, leader of the Ruhunu Janatha Party Oswald Aruna de Soysa, Sanath Pinnaduwa from National Alliance party, Sarath Kongahage representing United National Alternative Front, Sarath Manamendra from New Sinhala Heritage party, leader of the United Socialist Party Siritunga Jayasuriya, and Wije Dias representing Socialist Equality Party.

BJP to organise nationwide protests
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch nationwide protests on price rise next week.
Sushma said the party would also attack the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) on the price rise issue in the budget session of parliament, as this is the major issue of the common man of this country.
She said the BJP would organise 'dharnas' and rallies at the district level this month-end and Feb 1-15 at the national level.

Malaysian Prime Minister invited to Tamil Meet
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has invited the Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammed Najib Tun Abdul Razak to attend the World Classical Tamil Conference.
The conference in scheduled to held at Coimbatore in June 2010. Karunanidhi also mentioned about the first World Classical Tamil Meet hosted by Malaysia in 1966.
Karunanidhi also invited the Malaysian industrialist to invest in Tamil Nadu. He also said that the state is ready to offer lots of incentives.

AIADMK in dilemma: Deputy Chief Minister Stalin
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Stalin has said that the AIADMK is in a big dilemma whether to contest or stay away from the Pennagaram by-election.
He also said that all the political parties and public has praised the DMK’s rule.
He also said that he is confident that the DMK Government would continue another term in office.
Stalin also said that the PMK has made a big mistake in the previous election to opt out from the DMK alliance.
The by-poll was earlier scheduled to happen on January 20, but was rescheduled to a later date due to festive occasions.

Bandh turns violent in Andhra
Bandh was called in the state of Andhra Pradesh by the students and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) seeking immediate formation of the Telangana state after a student committed suicide for the cause.
The bandh started in the morning and the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses did not ply on the roads and following this schools, colleges and most of the business establishments were closed in Hyderabad, Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Karimnagar.
There was chaos at the Osmania University where the body of the student, Venugopal Reddy was kept and the police resorted to lathi charge. The students demanded that the ministers send their resignation and force the center to take a quick decision on the Telangana issue.

Raj Thackeray appeals to use Marathi in daily life
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray who is well known to be an anti-North India campaigner requested Maharshtrians to use Marathi in daily life.
Thackeray has planned to send letters to every household in the state, insisting on use Marathi in daily life.
A party leader said, "Thackeray will pen the letter in Marathi and MNS workers will go to households in the state on February 27 to deliver the letter."
February 27 is been referred as Marathi Language Day every year in memory of noted poet VV Shirwadkar a.k.a Kusumagraj, whose birth anniversary falls on the day.
"In the letter, the MNS chief will urge the people to use Marathi everywhere, including offices, trains and marketplace," he added.
Marathi is the 4th most spoken language in India and the 15th most spoken language in the world.
