Earthquake shakes eastern Turkey; 11 dead

A strong earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6, hit eastern Turkey Monday, killing at least 11 people, an official said.
Gov. Muammer Erol said the victims were from the small village of Okcular, where the earthquake knocked down houses.
CNN-Turk television said rescue teams dispatched to the area were working to save six people trapped under rubble.
At least four of the victims were children, according to the private Dogan news agency.
The quake in Elazig province occurred at 4:32 a.m. (0232 GMT) and was centered near the village of Basyurt, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory. It was followed by an aftershock measuring 4.1.
The quake was felt in neighboring provinces of Tunceli, Bingol and Diyarbakir where residents fled to the streets in panic and spent the night outdoors.
Elazig is some 550 kilometers (340 miles) east of Ankara, the capital.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the North Anatolian fault.
In 1999, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

A Sweet Victory for Kathryn Bigelow

It was a historic victory for Kathryn Bigelow when she won the Oscar for Best Director at Sunday's Academy Awards. Bigelow is the first woman ever to win an Oscar in that category.

Despite the fact that her war film, "The Hurt Locker," was one of the lowest-grossing films ever nominated, she beat out Quentin Tarantino ("Inglorious Basterds"), Lee Daniels ("Precious"), Jason Reitman ("Up In The Air") and perhaps the most unusual rival, her ex-husband James Cameron, nominated for the sci-fi epic "Avatar."

James Cameron trying to be 'very zen' about Oscar night

James Cameron's wife, Suzy Amis, is wearing a dress made by Jillian Granz, 21, who won a contest to create sustainable fabric, reports USA TODAY's Claudia Puig.

The director's wife raising a money and awareness for a green school. The dress is blue (as were the characters in Avatar) and Cameron has a touch of blue handkerchief on his tux.

About the night, Cameron said, "I like to be very zen about this. There's not much you can do about it. ... I like to enjoy it for what it is. This is the global event of the year for movies."

Jeff Bridges Talks 'Crazy Heart,' Quotes 'Lebowski' Backstage At Oscars

After years of sitting idly by while the dude abided, the Academy Awards finally gave back to Jeff Bridges, with the veteran actor winning his first Oscar for "Crazy Heart." Shortly after receiving Best Actor honors, the easygoing "Big Lebowski" legend greeted the press backstage — and continued the love-in.

Asked to comment on a career that's had plenty of failures and has now achieved the ultimate success, Bridges quoted his most famous movie role. "I've had ups and downs," he laughed, staying as humble as always. "What does the Dude say? Strikes and gutters, man!"

Bridges bowled a strike tonight thanks to a tailor-made character in broken-down country rocker Bad Blake, a role that had Bridges performing songs onstage in arenas and barrooms alike. "It was the music — that's how I most identified with Bad," Bridges said of what attracted him to the character. "But unlike Bad, he had four great wives he got rid of, and I have a great marriage."

Some Oscar followers have noted the recent rise in Oscar-winning actors (Bridges, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, etc.) whose movies weren't nominated for Best Picture — implying solid acting but mediocrity elsewhere.

"That's the exciting thing to me, that this award would bring attention to a great movie," Bridges countered, saying that an acting award makes as many people see the film, before admitting, "I was surprised with 10 nominees that 'Crazy Heart' didn't make it — in a way, that's one aspect of what these awards are about, to bring attention to all these great movies we made."

The bottom line, Bridges insisted, is much bigger than Hollywood. "I'm all about getting us together, getting the world healthy," said Bridges, holding his Oscar. "Movies are a way of looking at the way this world could work."

Unlike Bad, Bridges said that it is the love of a good woman that's been able to keep him strong all these years — even though it sometimes seems like he's apart from her more often than they're together. "The first thing that pops into my mind is my wife, my support. She holds my kite strings so I can go out there and then she pulls them back when I come home," he explained. "She pointed out that we've been apart 11 of the last 14 months — so I've been way out there."

winners of oscars 2010

Kathryn Bigelow was the big winner of the night, becoming the first woman to win best director for "The Hurt Locker." As she rose to accept her award, the audience, including her ex-husband and chief rival for best director, James Cameron, stood and clapped. Barbra Streisand who announced the winner said, "The time has come," before saying Bigelow's name. Bigelow called it the "moment of a lifetime" and dedicated the award to the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bigelow also accepted the award for best picture, which beat about blockbuster "Avatar."

Oscar winners 2010 - The Hurt Locker upsets Avatar

Oscar winners 2010 - The Hurt Locker upsets Avatar

The 2010 Academy Awards is history and of the Oscar winners for 2010 the talk is how the The Hurt Locker upset Avatar. And at the Night of 100 Stars Party at The Beverly Hills Hotel, the conversation was thick with why Avatar lost to The Hurt Locker. (It wasn't an upset here. This blogger missed correctly predicting six of the total number of Oscar winner categories, and missed none of the major Oscar awards.)

First some housecleaning: congratulations to Katheryn Bigelow on becoming the first female director to win an Oscar for Best Director for The Hurt Locker, which then went on to win Best Picture. It really is about time.

Second, this issue in brief as they're taking down the light stands and breaking down the media room around this blogger after the Night of 100 Stars Party. The bottom line is that it's easier to make a movie with great special effects more so than it is a timely film with a good story. The Best Picture is the film that's a story that causes one to think about the World around them. The Hurt Locker, in so many ways, was that movie.

Ok. I've got to jam out of here. More videos and blog posts coming from a great Oscar Sunday!

Did anyone actually watch the clip package?

"Twilight" stars Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart introduced an homage to horror films, lamenting that no horror films had received an Oscar since 1973's "The Exorcist." But what about the 1991 best picture winner, "Silence of the Lambs"? It's not like they overlooked it: Dr. Hannibal Lecter -- one of the true monsters of modern horror films -- was even included in the clip package.

Meanwhile, the Oscar for sound editing went to Paul N.J. Ottosson for "The Hurt Locker." Ottosson had barely left the stage when he was called back to receive the sound mixing award for the war drama with Ray Beckett. "The Hurt Locker" has won the most statuettes, with three.

Another movie performing well: "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Mo'Nique, considered the shoo-in for an Oscar for supporting actress as the vile, abusive mother of a pregnant teen in the harrowing drama took home the honor as expected. The comic talk-show host, who opted out of doing extensive campaigning this awards season, thanked the academy and said it proves that a win "can be about the performance and not the politics."

Moments earlier, an emotional Geoffrey Fletcher won for adapted screenplay for "Precious." Holding back the tears, Fletcher said: "I don't know what to say. This is for everybody who works on a dream every day." His win was a surprise: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner were the favorites for "Up in the Air."

Until that moment, the 82nd annual Academy Awards felt like it was all going according to the oddsmakers.

The trophy for original song went to Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for "The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)." The award for animated feature film went to "Up," which is also nominated for best film. And as expected, Austrian actor Christoph Waltz danced away with supporting actor for playing a brutal Nazi Jew hunter in "Inglourious Basterds." All three have dominated this awards season, winning practically every available honor.

Mark Boal won original screenplay for the war drama "The Hurt Locker." It was followed by a tribute to the late, great teen-angst writer-director John Hughes, who died unexpectedly last year. Several of the Hughes veterans gathered on stage in his memory, including Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick and Judd Nelson.

Awards in the short-film categories were "Logorama" for animated, "Music by Prudence" for documentary and "The New Tenants" for live action. The honor for costume design went to Sandy Powell for "The Young Victoria." Art direction went to Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg and set decorator Kim Sinclair for "Avatar," which also won a cinematography trophy for Mauro Fiore.

Ben Stiller, decked out in "Avatar" Navi blue, complete with tail and braid, presented the best makeup award to "Star Trek."

The show kicked off with Neil Patrick Harris, who got rave reviews for hosting the Tonys and the Emmys last year, performing a musical number -- "No One Wants to Do It Alone." It was a reference to the hosts of the show, the wild and crazy Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, or, as Harris called them, "the biggest pair since Dolly Parton."

And with that, the hosts came down from the heavens at the Kodak Theatre, holding hands.

The witty, salty banter that ensued included putting on 3-D glasses to spot "Avatar" director James Cameron in the audience and joking that Meryl Streep, with whom the two starred in "It's Complicated," is the most nominated performer in academy history. Or, as Martin said, the performer with the most losses. (Then they joked about having a threesome with Streep on the set.)

For the first time in 66 years, the academy has expanded the number of best picture nominees from five to 10, and the result is an eclectic mixture of blockbusters such as "Avatar' and indies such as "The Hurt Locker" and "An Education."

And speaking of the best picture winner -- will it be "The Hurt Locker," which has gained momentum in the past few months despite the recent disclosure that one of the producer's sent e-mails out asking academy members to vote for the film, or the highest-grossing movie to date, "Avatar," which won the Golden Globe for best drama film?

With those films battling for the first prize, perhaps one of the other eight nominees such as "Inglourious Basterds" will slip in to win the top Oscar.

The academy may also make history -- if Kathryn Bigelow receives the director Oscar for "The Hurt Locker," she'll be the first woman to win the honor.

Adding to the fun for Oscar watchers: Bigelow used to be married to Cameron. But there is no rivalry – Cameron has been a vocal supporter of Bigelow's film.

Now after seeing the film and the wonderful reception her character gets Trisha is more than happy to have done that role.

But will she do it again? Never the beauty asserts. Jessie is different.

Angaadi Theru to see the light of day

Director Vasantha Balan can breathe a long sigh of relief. The producers of his film, 'Angaadi Theru', have decided on a release date- March 26.

This much-awaited announcement could not have come at a better time. The song 'Aval Appadi Ondrum Azhagillai', which literally translates as 'She isn't so beautiful, but there's nothing better than her beauty in this world', has already topped the charts. Na Muthukumar, who has penned the lyrics, has said that it is his best song ever, and remains close to his heart. The music directors are G. V. Prakash and Vijay Anthony.

'Angaadi Theru' has been produced by Ayngaran International, the organisation that had earlier churned out films such as Ajith Kumar's 'Aegan', Vijay's 'Villu', and the Jeyam Ravi starrer, 'Peranmai'. The lead pair comprises Akil, who had made his debut with Balaji Sakthivel's 'Kalloori', and Anjali, of 'Kattradhu Tamizh' fame.

international women s day 2010

international women s day, international women s day 2010 theme, international women s day history, international women s day in india, international women s day 2010 canada

Every year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 . It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. The IWD is also celebrated as the first spring holiday in the Northern Hemisphere as the first day of March is considered the first day of the spring season.

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it came to commemorate the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The idea of having an international women’s day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions.

On occasion of 2010 International Women’s Day the International Committee of the Red Cross is drawing attention to the hardship displaced women endure. The displacement of populations is one of the gravest consequences of today’s armed conflicts. It affects women in a host of ways. But far from being helpless victims, women are resourceful, resilient and courageous in the face of hardship.

82 academy awards

Television viewers in more than 3 million homes in New York City and its suburbs discovered this morning that their cable TV provider was no longer carrying local station WABC, flagship of the ABC Television network, raising the possibility that they might not be able to watch tonight’s globally-televised 82nd annual Academy Awards ceremony.

The cutoff came after the breakdown of negotiations between The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, and Cablevision Systems Corporation, one of the nation’s largest cable companies. Disney wants more from Cablevision in so-called “retransmission fees” for the right to transmit the WABC signal to the cable company’s subscribers. When the two sides couldn’t reach agreement by their current contract deadline, Disney pulled the WABC signal.

These two prosperous companies will undoubtedly sort out their dispute, maybe even in time for tonight’s orgy of Hollywood self-congratulation. What’s notable about the confrontation, however, is the harsh public language used by corporate combatants and the hints it provides of progress in the movement toward corporate governance reform.

On its web site for customers, for example, Cablevision argued: “It is wrong for ABC to demand $40 million in new fees, which is nothing more than a new TV tax, to help pay the salaries and bonuses for top ABC executives.” (Translation: Executive compensation levels at Disney are a real issue. That affects the type and quality of TV programming you receive.)

Disney’s WABC fired back: “Cablevision pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren’t getting what they pay for – again. It’s time for Jim Dolan and the Dolan family dynasty to finally step up, be fair, and do what’s right for our viewers.” (Translation: The Dolan family makes an awfully good living because it tightly controls publicly-held Cablevision through its ownership of a special Class B common stock. That affects the type and quality TV programming you receive.)

It’s no wonder that The Morning Bridge, a TV industry newsletter, published a special Sunday morning bulletin focusing on the war of words and asking: “Think anybody wins in these situations?”
